Chapter Thirteen

"Nice of you to wait around, bitch," the limping streeter called from behind his pack, his voice hard and vicious. "Now we don't have to go looking for you to settle the score. Hurt her good, cousins, but don't kill her. I'll take care of that part of it later and you can have the guy right now."

The ninth streeter showed a grin the way the first eight were doing, then he left the limping one to join the others. Many of the first eight were carrying heavy sticks of some kind; the rest had their fists clenched and ready. Hellis had taken a quick step away from me toward the bench I'd been using, and when he came back he held the staff I hadn't realized he'd brought with him.

"Am I correct in believing that we need not show restraint in dealing with this situation?" Hellis asked, a glance showing the extreme satisfaction in his smile.

"Absolutely," I agreed, only distantly tempted to use the invisible stunner I still wore. "As far as they know we're helpless, and those who attack the helpless deserve whatever they get. The next victims they choose probably won't have our ability to stop them."

The streeters had hesitated and lost some of their amusement at our exchange, but they didn't get suddenly smart and leave. Instead they got angry because we'd made them nervous, and then they came at us fast. But only the first four were able to close with us immediately, and it didn't make any sense to give the others time to get behind us.

As Hellis used his staff on the two on his side, I used a side kick on one and a roundhouse kick on the other of mine. The kicks put the two streeters down fast, and then I had their sticks for my own use. The impromptu weapons were a little lighter than I was used to, but they were fairly solid and ought to last for the few minutes they'd be needed. I turned my wrists once to get the feel of the sticks, then stepped forward and used them on two of the next attackers. One of the two held a stick of his own, but he'd obviously never been trained in its proper use. He went down fast after a blow to his temple, the one standing next to him going the same way the next instant.

By the time I looked around for the next target, the attack was over. Hellis and his staff had accounted for the other five streeters, all nine taken care of in ten seconds or less. That left only the limping streeter, who had turned white where he stood. He'd also frozen in place from fear, which was the last mistake he ever made. As I looked around, Hellis was already on his way over to the last of the pack.
